The legendary Ruby Foo’s on Decarie in Montreal (1951). Not only was this a Chinese-Canadian restaurant, it was also a center of Montreal’s night life and social activity, especially for the Jewish community.  Leonard Cohen saw his first gig here in 1949.

we finally put together our 全盒 (cheun hup) for chinese new year. filled with some possibly sickeningly sweet candies and lots of dried fruit & veg. got some lotus root, coconut, wintermelon, carrot, lotus seeds….. one of my favourite traditions of chinese new year, and this is the first time i’m doing it in my own home!
especially exciting because my mom gave me her spare cheun hup, which is an awesome vintage tin that my grandparents brought over from hk. totally childhood nostalgia.

10. childhood.
vitasoy branded juiceboxes were the quintessential childhood drink for diasporic hong kong, first-gen kiddos like me. they were always a special treat because they’re expensive as far as juice boxes go, and because my mom didn’t like us having sugary treats all the time.
my mom always brewed her own chrysanthemum tea, it’s good when you’re “yeet hay” (canto for when your body gets too hot, too many fried foods or greasy shit). chrysanthemum tea was also the remedy to the constant nosebleeds i got as a kid (whatta fuckin nerd!), but man there’s nothing like reaching for a vitasoy box!
i got a lift to T&T this weekend and they were having a sale! 3 6packs for $6.99! i got the standard lemon tea, chrysanthemum tea, and lychee juice.

literal translation: big white rabbit milk candy. it’s just milk candy & “white rabbit” is really sort of like the brand name. In Singapore, just call it the “white rabbit sweet” & anyone will know what you mean!
