Having worked with kids who didn’t have basic hygiene skills, I can say that never never joined the kids in the shower. Not even the kids with enuresis and really poor hygiene. They would soap up, wrap up in a towl, bang on the bathroom door, we’d knock back, open, check to make sure they were all soaped up and things like the crook of their elbows were wet, then close the door and let them finish up. It was a gender specific duty (and I don’t think there was ever a trans kid), no other kids or staff were in the hall when it was done, and you didn’t step foot in the bathroom.
